GE Refrigerator Not Cooling
On GE refrigerators that run but won’t cool the fresh-food side, we usually find an evaporator fan problem, a frosted coil from a defrost failure, or dirty condenser coils.
Common causes
- Evaporator fan. Freezer cold, fridge warm.
- Defrost system. Heater, thermostat or the main control stops defrosting.
- Condenser coils and fan. Dirt or a dead fan makes the whole box run warm.
- Main control board. Some GE models control the fans and defrost from one board.
- Damper. Stuck closed on some side-by-side and bottom-freezer models.
Checks you can do safely
Turn off power (and water or gas where it applies) before you reach inside any appliance.
- Check the temperature settings on the display.
- Vacuum the coils at the bottom.
- Open the freezer and listen for the fan.
- Look for frost on the freezer back panel.
