Washer Not Spinning
Most washers that won’t spin either can’t drain, can’t lock the lid or door, or have a worn belt or coupling. An unbalanced load can also stop the spin.
Common causes
- Drain problem. If the water can’t get out, the washer won’t spin. Clogged pump or filter.
- Lid switch or door lock. The washer won’t spin unless it knows the door is shut.
- Unbalanced load. One heavy item, like a rug or a comforter, throws it off.
- Belt or motor coupling. Worn or broken on many top-loaders.
- Motor or control. Less common, but it happens.
Checks you can do safely
Turn off power (and water or gas where it applies) before you reach inside any appliance.
- Redistribute the load and run a spin-only cycle.
- Check the drain hose for kinks.
- On a front-loader, clean the drain filter behind the small door at the bottom front. Have towels ready.
- Make sure the lid or door closes firmly.
