Gas Stove Won’t Light
If a gas burner clicks but won’t light, it’s usually a wet or dirty igniter, or a burner cap that isn’t sitting flat. If nothing clicks, look at the spark module or switch.
Common causes
- Burner cap out of place. It has to sit flat and centered.
- Wet or dirty igniter. After a boil-over or cleaning.
- Clogged burner ports. Food in the holes.
- Cracked igniter. The white ceramic piece cracks.
- Spark module or switch. No click, or clicking that won’t stop.
Checks you can do safely
Turn off power (and water or gas where it applies) before you reach inside any appliance.
- If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company or 911. Don’t touch switches.
- Let the burner dry for a few hours after a spill.
- Seat the cap flat and centered.
- Clear the burner ports with a straight pin, not a toothpick.
- Check the range is plugged in. Gas ranges need power to spark.
