Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes
If dishes come out dirty, look at the filter and spray arms first. Then the water: not enough water or water that isn’t hot enough. A weak wash pump is the last thing on the list.
Common causes
- Dirty filter. Dirty water gets sprayed back on the dishes.
- Clogged spray arms. Holes plugged with food or hard-water scale.
- Low water. A bad inlet valve or a float stuck up.
- Water not hot. The water heater is set low, or the dishwasher’s heater isn’t working.
- Wash pump. Worn out, so pressure is weak.
- Loading and detergent. Bowls blocking the arms, or old detergent pods.
Checks you can do safely
Turn off power (and water or gas where it applies) before you reach inside any appliance.
- Clean the filter.
- Take off the spray arms and clear the holes with a toothpick.
- Run the kitchen tap until the water is hot before you start the cycle.
- Make sure the spray arms spin freely.
