Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working
When the ice maker stops, check the obvious first: the shutoff arm or switch, the freezer temperature, and the water filter. After that it’s usually the water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, or the ice maker itself.
Common causes
- Ice maker turned off. The wire arm is up, or the switch got bumped.
- Freezer too warm. Most ice makers want the freezer near 0°F to cycle.
- Clogged water filter. Slow water means small or hollow cubes, then none.
- Frozen fill tube. Low water pressure or a leaky valve lets the tube freeze shut.
- Water inlet valve. The valve at the back stops opening.
- Ice maker assembly. The motor or the control in the unit fails.
Checks you can do safely
Turn off power (and water or gas where it applies) before you reach inside any appliance.
- Make sure the arm is down or the switch is on.
- Check the freezer temperature.
- Replace the filter if it’s past due.
- Look for ice jammed in the chute or bin and clear it.
- Check that the water valve behind the fridge is open.
