Dishwasher Not Draining
Water in the bottom of the dishwasher is usually a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or disposal inlet, or a drain pump that’s jammed or worn out.
Common causes
- Clogged filter. Food and labels pile up in the filter at the bottom.
- Garbage disposal. Full, or a new disposal still has the knockout plug in place.
- Kinked drain hose. Under the sink, behind the dishwasher.
- Drain pump. Jammed with glass or a bone, or the motor fails.
- Check valve. Stuck, so water can’t leave.
Checks you can do safely
Turn off power (and water or gas where it applies) before you reach inside any appliance.
- Take out and rinse the filter.
- Run the disposal.
- Look under the sink for a kinked or sagging drain hose.
- Scoop out the water and look for anything stuck in the pump opening. Turn the power off first.
